EgyptAir hijack: Jet lands at Larnaca airport EgyptAir hijack: Jet lands at Larnaca airport
(35 minutes later)
A hijacked EgyptAir airliner has landed at Larnaca airport in Cyprus. An EgyptAir airliner has been hijacked and forced to divert to Larnaca airport on the south coast of Cyprus.
Airline and Egyptian government sources are quoted as saying that the domestic flight travelling from Alexandria to Cairo was taken over by at least one armed hijacker. Flight MS181, an Airbus A320 carrying 81 passengers from Alexandria to Cairo, was taken over after a passenger said he was wearing an explosives belt.
They asked for the flight to land in Cyprus, an EgyptAir spokeswoman is quoted as saying. EgyptAir said negotiations had resulted in the release of all those on board apart from the crew and four passengers.
The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation reports that 55 people are on board. No demands have been made by those in control of the plane.
There were earlier reports of more than 80 people on board. Larnaca airport has been closed and scheduled flights diverted elsewhere.
