John Langtrey from the Fire and Rescue Service praised the neighbours who rescued the couple in the Ligoniel fire.
"With the working smoke alarm there, they (the couple) would have had a warning," he said.
"But at that stage the fire was developing very quickly in the bedroom and there was a lot of smoke and they were already feeling the effects of some smoke inhalation.
"Certainly the neighbours affected, we would call it a rescue - they definitely rescued the couple from the property."
