Newborn baby found on back porch of home in Hagerstown Baby said to have been found on porch was inside the home, police say
(about 1 hour later)
Authorities said a newborn baby was found on the back porch of a home in Hagerstown, Md., about 70 miles northwest of Washington. Authorities now say that a newborn baby girl who, they were told, was found on the back porch of a home in Hagerstown, Md., had not in fact been left there.
The baby was found just after 7 a.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of Frederick Street. When officers arrived, the residents said they found the baby wrapped in a plastic bag on the porch. Hagerstown Police had said the baby was found wrapped in plastic on the back porch of a home. But later the information changed.
Emergency personnel took the baby to an area hospital for treatment. No further details were available on the baby’s condition. It was not known how old the baby was at the time. They said in a statement posted on Facebook that a juvenile who “gave birth to the baby inside the residence” initially told police that she found the baby outside. But that turns out to not be true.
Police said an investigation is underway. According to police, officers found the baby inside the home on the couch wrapped in a blanket when they arrived.
Police said the baby girl was in stable condition and was taken to an area hospital for examination. The juvenile was also taken to a hospital for treatment and is in good condition, according to police.
Police said they’ve referred the case to a social service department for “the safety and welfare of the juvenile and baby girl involved.”
