The South African government will appeal a judge’s decision to grant parole to the killer of Chris Hani, a leading anti-apartheid activist who was assassinated in 1993, a spokesman for Justice Minister Michael Masutha announced on Wednesday.

Janusz Walus, a Polish immigrant, has been serving a life sentence for the murder of Mr. Hani, a Communist often regarded as the most popular figure in the African National Congress after Nelson Mandela.

Mr. Walus’s co-conspirator, Clive Derby-Lewis, who provided the murder weapon, was paroled on medical grounds last year. A High Court judge in Pretoria granted Mr. Walus parole on March 10, but he will remain in prison pending the outcome of the appeal.

Critics have warned that the parole decision could reopen wounds dating to the apartheid era.
