A District man pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges of assault and driving under the influence following a New Year’s Day crash that injured 13 people standing on a sidewalk outside a downtown Washington nightclub.
Malik Lloyd, 25, pleaded guilty in D.C. Superior Court to three counts of assault with significant bodily injury, one count of destruction of property and one count of driving under the influence in the Jan. 1 crash. In a separate case, Lloyd pleaded guilty to possession of an unlawful firearm and one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. He is scheduled to be sentenced in both cases in May 25.
According to prosecutors, around 1:30 a.m., Lloyd was driving a Chrysler 200 northbound on 17th Street NW when he struck another vehicle. Lloyd drove away and then drove up onto the sidewalk in front of the Barcode nightclub in the 1600 block of L Street NW. Lloyd’s car struck a tree box and several pedestrians before finally striking a light pole. At least three people were seriously injured in the crash. Many were injured directly by the vehicle while others were injured as a result of flying debris.
