A Virginia man was killed early Sunday when the car he was driving hurtled off a bridge while exiting the outer loop of the Capital Beltway in Maryland, state police said.

Maryland State Police said they suspect the man, Jose Leonel Bonilla Torres, 23, of Herndon, had been drinking.

According to a news release, Torres was taking the Connecticut Avenue exit from Interstate 495 at about 2:45 a.m. when his car veered off the ramp, struck the side of the bridge and landed on Kensington Parkway below.

Torres was ejected from his car. Troopers pronounced him dead at the scene.

He had no passengers, and no other vehicles were involved.

A man was struck and killed late Saturday after he stepped in front of a Fairfax County police cruiser, police said Sunday.

Jeffrey Ponce Aguilar, 26, died at an Alexandria hospital about 45 minutes after being hit, county officials said.

According to police, a county patrol officer was going north on Beulah Street near the intersection with Old Beulah Road, in the Alexandria section of the county. As the officer drove toward the intersection at about 11 p.m., Aguilar — going against a green light — stepped into the road and was hit, authorities said.

They said the officer immediately called for an ambulance. Aguilar was taken to Inova Franconia-Springfield HealthPlex, where he died at 11:44 p.m.

The officer was not injured.

It was raining heavily at the time of the crash, and Aguilar was wearing dark clothing, said Tawny Wright, a county police spokeswoman. A preliminary investigation determined neither speed nor alcohol — by any party — was a factor in the incident, she said. It does not appear that Aguilar was attempting to harm himself, Wright added.

The officer, who was put on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation, is not expected to be charged with any crime, Wright said. Officers in pedestrian-involved crashes are not named unless they are charged, she said.

A Middleburg man has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend, Leesburg police said Sunday.

Darrick Lee Lewis, 30, was charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and violating a restraining order in the death of 34-year-old Christina Fisher of Leesburg, police said. Lewis is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

At about 6:15 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a 911 call about a domestic incident at Fisher’s residence in the 300 block of Nansemond Street SE. When officers arrived, they found Fisher with a gunshot wound to her upper body, police said.

She was flown to a hospital and died there.

After a short investigation, police concluded that Lewis had come to Fisher’s home and, after an argument, shot her. He fled by car to his house, they said. Police arrested Lewis at his residence in Middleburg.
