There were fears for the safety of a tower crane being used during the construction. John Dickie, group manager with Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The fire took hold very quickly yesterday afternoon. It involved 82 flats under various stages of construction.
A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue said a structural engineer had been called to the site to assess the crane. "We had to increase resources throughout the afternoon and evening time and in the early hours. It was brought under control in the early hours of the morning but we're still in attendance.
An investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the blaze. "The structures are in an unstable condition and there's a tower crane which is causing us problems as well."
At its height 50 firefighters tackled the blaze. An investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the fire.
