He also predicted heavy snow in all parts of Wales, with Scotland and Northern Ireland also likely to be hit by wintry conditions. But the snow was expected to clear in this part of the country later.
Where driving is concerned, the forecaster added: "The mix of snow and ice has created treacherous conditions in some parts of the country." Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have experienced wintry conditions.
However, he said the snow was likely to clear in southern England later in the morning. And the forecaster said more heavy snow was expected in northern England, west Wales and south west England.
The Met Office said there was at least an 80% chance of heavy snow and widespread icy roads across Northern Ireland, north Wales and north-west England. He forecasted intermittent snow showers, between spells of sunshine, in Northern Ireland and Scotland.
It also said there was a strong possibility of heavy snow in the West Midlands and southern England. Mr Fawkes said temperatures in large towns and cities are set to fall to as low as -2C.
"This makes it a very cold day for April. It follows on from the warmest day of the year so far on Thursday, in Inverbervie, Aberdeenshire, where the temperature was 18.9C," he said.
The forecaster added that there was the possibility of further snow showers in some parts of the UK on Monday.
