Teenagers held over city trouble 'Internet used' to plan city riot
(about 1 hour later)
Four teenagers were arrested during a disturbance in Londonderry on Friday evening, it has emerged. Police believe a riot in Londonderry involving up to 100 youths was organised on the internet.
The four were questioned about disorderly conduct in the Rosemount area but were later released. Officers were attacked on Friday night after they tried to break up rival gangs on Abercorn Road in the cityside.
It followed an incident earlier in the evening at Academy Road in the city, when police were attacked during trouble involving up to 100 youths. Two rival gangs turned on the police when they tried to calm the situation down. Officers were pelted with bottles and bricks, but there were no injuries.
Bricks, bottles and other missiles were thrown during the disturbance, which happened just after 2200 BST on Friday. Police say it began as a row between two individuals, but escalated when their friends got involved.
There were no reports of any injuries but one police vehicle was damaged. There were no arrests, according to a PSNI spokesperson. They believe it was orchestrated through social networking websites.
Later, four teenagers were arrested for public order offences as large crowds gathered in the Rosemount area. They were later released, pending further reports.
