Good evening. Here’s the latest.Good evening. Here’s the latest.
1. Weeks of sniping in the Democratic presidential race flared into outright hostility. Bernie Sanders questioned Hillary Clinton’s qualifications for the White House and said: “I’m not going to get beaten up. I’m not going to get lied about. We will fight back.” Mrs. Clinton tried to brush the comments off. “I will take Bernie Sanders over Donald Trump or Ted Cruz any time,” she said.1. 2. Mr. Cruz is seeking the allegiance — and donations — of those desperate to stop Mr. Trump, but the dance is delicate. “Lots of people are giving him a second look,” a powerful New York donor said, before acknowledging that he wondered why “out of 100 people in the Senate, 99 don’t like him.” A Cruz backer in Dallas said the candidate’s biggest obstacle was “his personality, mostly.”2. 3. The number of inmates has shrunk to 89, but President Obama’s efforts to close the U.S. prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, have been blocked by Republicans who do not want any of them transferred to prisons on U.S. soil. A Times investigation shows that American prisons hold 443 convicted terrorists. Thirty-six are in Colorado’s supermax facility, the triangular building above on the upper right.3. 4. By one count, the Nigerian militant group Boko Haram has used at least 105 women and girls in suicide attacks. Women who have escaped, like the 47-year-old above, and others arrested before they could detonate bombs give dovetailing accounts of the group’s methods. They describe being terrorized, deprived of food, forced to convert to Islam, sometimes raped, trained to kill and promised eternal life.4. 5. The Senate passed provisions to enhance security around airport perimeters and other measures affecting the U.S. transportation system, addressing public fears after the attacks in Belgium last month. 6. “American Idol” concludes its 15th and final season tonight (8 p.m. Eastern, Fox). Our critic says that the show’s empowerment of a voting audience helped pave the way for “the grand democracy of the Internet, where to vote with clicks is to breathe” and “online fan communities that are now the norm.” 6. 7. Offshore accounts and hidden money revealed by the so-called Panama Papers continued to shake governments around the world. So far, few U.S. citizens have been implicated, which some experts say is because U.S. laws allow for such practices. Delaware, Nevada and Wyoming “market themselves internationally,” one expert said, but “you can create anonymous companies anywhere in the United States.” This site in Wilmington, Del., is the legal address of 285,000 businesses.7. Reports of the number of workers varied. The official Syrian news agency said more than 300 workers had been taken, but a nongovernment group with a network of contacts in the country put the number at 170.9. 10. Finally, the defending titleholder, Jordan Spieth, led the Masters field as the first of the year’s four major golf tournaments got underway. Our reporter, walking the challenging but manicured slopes of the Augusta National course for the first time, writes, “To call it a billy goat’s course sounds a shade informal for a place that relishes its formalities, but a billy goat would certainly recognize the challenge, although it might have trouble finding much to eat.”10.
