Version 0 of 1.

Will Jawando is a former Obama White House aide Education Department official running for Maryland’s 8th District Democratic Congressional nomination.

Below are five things about him you may not know.

1) First date: Jawando took his future wife Michele to a voter registration drive and a Temptations concert.

2) Early advice: The late Sen. Ted Kennedy told him about the importance of achieving big legislative victories by winning partially over time. “You have to have that mindset in Congress,” Jawando says. “We got family and medical leave under Bill Clinton, and now we’ll get paid family leave.”

3) Not Just Another Voice: Sings in the men’s choir at Reid Temple AME Church in Silver Spring.

4) White House hoops: A basketball player at St. Johns’ College High School and Catholic University, Jawando laced up his sneakers for games with President Obama when he worked in the office of public engagement.

5) Almost ran from a Cop: As a young man he was in a car with a friend who shouted an obscenity to a woman on the street. She turned out to be an undercover police officer, who arrested Jawando as well. Fearful that a criminal record could jeopardize his future, he thought about running. He didn’t, and the record of the arrest was eventually expunged.

Jawando wrote about the incident last year for The Root.
