5 things to know about congressional candidate Ana Sol Gutiérrez
(about 7 hours later) | |
Ana Sol Gutiérrez has been known as a passionate advocate for Latino issues ever since she first took public office in 1990. But this engineer, a child of diplomats, also has some interesting biographical details that aren’t as well known. Here are five:
1) “Little gringa”: Gutiérrez, 74, was one of just 2 Latino students in her 625-person graduating class at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. She says she wasn’t really close with the other student, the son of the Argentinian ambassador, and was instead a “little gringa” cheerleader who served on student government.
2) “ Je t’aime” instead of “Te quiero”: Gutiérrez met her future husband while studying abroad in France — but her Bolivian beau didn’t speak English and she forgot her native Spanish as a teen. They spoke French to each other instead.
3) Coding skills out of this world: As an employee of Computer Sciences Corp., she says she helped write the code for the Hubble Space Telescope’s orienting system before its 1990 launch.
4) “Baptism through earthquake”: Her first day on the job as the Transportation Department’s acting administrator for emergency response coincided with the 1994 Northridge earthquake that left 57 dead. She was sworn in on the elevator on her way to brief the secretary.
5) Locked up: She has been arrested four times, including at the White House and the U.S. Capitol, for protests related to immigration policy. | 5) Locked up: She has been arrested four times, including at the White House and the U.S. Capitol, for protests related to immigration policy. |
