She was tricked into getting out of her vehicle at about 13:50 BST on Wednesday when told there was a problem with it. Greater Manchester Police said the suspect behind the "horrible crime" was white, in his mid-40s, and stocky. A man, 45, has been arrested on suspicion of assault.
At the time of the crime he was wearing a light long-sleeved top and dark trousers. The car was found about three miles away in Buersil Avenue, Rochdale.
'Horrible crime' 'Strong lady'
Witnesses said the woman was bending down next to the car when the man jumped into it and reversed at speed, knocking her to the floor. Mrs Cooper is being treated in hospital, and her family have appealed for help to find out what happened.
He then drove over her as she lay in the car's path. Grandson Matthew Cooper said: "My grandma is a very strong lady. She has gone through a very difficult couple of years, losing her son and her husband and just when she was back on her feet, someone has quite literally knocked her down.
It was later recovered about three miles away in Buersil Avenue, Rochdale. "She is in a very serious condition and has a long road to recovery. The injuries she's sustained would be difficult for a young and healthy person to overcome."
The victim is now recovering in hospital.
Appealing for witnesses Det Insp Ian Harratt said it was "one of the worst incidents I have had to investigate in a very long time.
"How someone can do this to anyone, never mind a 79-year-old lady, I will never know."
