Images show a huge gap missing between sections of the elevated bike lane, which overlooks the sea front. Some of the reports say two people have died but this is yet to be confirmed.
It comes as Rio de Janeiro prepares to host this summer's Olympic games. The elevated bicycle follows the Atlantic coast and was one of many projects built in the run-up to this summer's Olympic games.
No sporting events were planned for the bike lane, which opened earlier this year.
The collapse happened late morning local time, reports say, with about 50m of the pathway crumbling into the shoreline.
A witness, Ademir Guedes, told the O Globo newspaper (in Portuguese) he was cycling along the route before being alerted to the danger.
"I thought he was joking. I never imagined a newly built bike path would collapse. I went slowly to the edge of the cliff. Then drivers started shouting at me warning of the risk."
It is not clear yet why the lane collapsed.
