His closest rival Mr Cruz earlier called him a "pathological liar" as the verbal blows reached a new intensity.
Indiana results as they come in
Mr Cruz and Republican candidate John Kasich have been hoping for a contested convention, in which delegates vote for the nominee.
The Democratic race is still too close to call, with front-runner Hillary Clinton maintaining a narrow lead over Bernie Sanders.
Having won a majority of Republican delegates so far, Mr Trump only needs to win 43% of remaining delegates to win the nomination.
Mr Cruz had been pinning his hopes on winning in Indiana and halting the momentum of Mr Trump, a New York businessman with no experience of elected office.
