An inquiry into the cause of the crash, which happened on a long, straight stretch of the road, has begun. All three cars ended up off the road and two burst into flames. Police are appealing for witnesses.
A woman who was a front seat passenger in the Fiesta was taken to West Cumberland Hospital, in Whitehaven, after suffering "serious injuries", Cumbria Police said. They are particularly keen to re-interview a man who stopped at the scene and gave a statement.
