First minister deadlock: AMs meet over Labour-Plaid deal First minister deadlock broken in Labour-Plaid Cymru deal
(35 minutes later)
A deal to end the stalemate over who becomes first minister has been shown to Labour and Plaid Cymru AMs. Carwyn Jones is set to be re-elected first minister after AMs from Labour and Plaid Cymru backed a deal to end the week-long deadlock over the post.
The two parties have held separate group meetings over the proposal, which could reinstall Labour's Carwyn Jones as head of the Welsh Government. The two parties have agreed to back a minority Labour Welsh Government following group meetings on Tuesday.
Both sides had said they made "good progress" over two days of talks, although no details of the agreement have been revealed. They spoke of "constructive and positive talks" about "shared priorities for the coming assembly, and future working arrangements".
AMs are likely to reconvene on Wednesday to elect the first minister. The assembly will reconvene on Wednesday to elect a first minister.
The Labour group meeting ended at around 12:00 BST on Tuesday. As he left, First Minister Carwyn Jones said a progress report was to follow "in good time". A statement entitled "Moving Wales Forwards" said:
The Plaid Cymru meeting went on longer, until around 1245 BST. A senior Plaid source said things were looking "very promising". "We are pleased to confirm that the Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru groups have today contacted the Presiding Officer in order to recall the Assembly tomorrow, and proceed with the nomination procedure for First Minister," the parties said in a joint statement following the group meetings on Tuesday.
The talks between senior figures from Labour and Plaid Cymru were held after the Senedd tied 29-29 last Wednesday on whether Mr Jones or Plaid leader Leanne Wood should be first minister. "This will allow the successful nomination of Carwyn Jones as First Minister, and the establishment of a Labour Minority Administration.
"This follows constructive and positive talks about the parties' shared priorities for the coming Assembly, and future working arrangements.
"The First Minister will set out tomorrow the next Government's intentions for the first 100 days, including a commitment to prioritise those areas that enjoy support from across most of the Assembly."
