The head was found by a worker at the quarry at Mepal, between Chatteris and Ely, on Monday and police were called at 15:00 BST. | |
It has not yet been established whether the head was that of a man or a woman. | |
Police stressed the discovery at Block Fen Drove was of a head and not a skull and that they were trying to establish how long the remains had been there. | |
"Officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit are conducting inquiries, both locally and across the county borders," a police spokesman said. | |
Mick George Ltd, which has an aggregates and landfill site there, told the BBC: "We are working closely with the police and providing them with all the information they need to undertake their investigations. | |
