The Supreme Court’s Display of Sense
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/19/opinion/the-supreme-courts-display-of-sense.html Version 0 of 1. To the Editor: Re “Court Sidesteps Contraception, Avoiding a Tie” (front page, May 17): The Supreme Court’s decision in Zubik v. Burwell, sending the case back to the lower courts to find a compromise, was excellent. The justices were again being asked to decide a contrived constitutional nuance in a severely divided country. Rather than issue another 4-to-4 non-decision, the court specifically told the parties to stop arguing and find a compromise. This may be a groundbreaking ruling. We should hope that this unanimous display of common sense continues even after the court has a ninth justice. DAVID HAGAN Arroyo Grande, Calif. |
