White House placed on lockdown after woman throws object over fence White House placed on lockdown after woman throws object over fence
(about 3 hours later)
The White House was placed on a partial security lockdown during the Memorial Day holiday, after a woman threw something over the north fence along Pennsylvania Avenue. The Secret Service said on Monday the White House had returned to normal operations after being placed on lockdown early in the afternoon.
A woman was detained and placed in handcuffs, while fire trucks and a hazardous materials response unit were called to the scene. It is common for secret service officers to sweep the grounds after such incidents, in this case to ensure nothing dangerous was thrown over the fence. A secret service official told Reuters hazardous material checks were being made. Spokesman Robert Hoback said someone at about 12.15pm threw a metal object over the north fence along Pennsylvania Avenue and was arrested without incident. Hoback did not identify the person, though a witness saw a woman placed in handcuffs.
The secret service would not allow reporters to leave the White House compound through its western gate and flashing lights from emergency responders could be seen nearby. Fire trucks and a hazardous materials response unit were called to the scene. It is common for officers to sweep the grounds after such incidents to ensure nothing dangerous was thrown over the fence.
Barack Obama had visited Arlington Cemetery earlier in the day, as part of the annual commemoration for armed services members. Hoback said the sweep results were negative.
The lockdown ensued shortly after President Barack Obama returned from a Memorial Day observance at Arlington National Cemetery.
