A baby boy and his mother escaped serious injury after a shop sign fell 6 metres (20ft) on to the child’s pram.

West Midlands ambulance service said the 10-month-old was “one very lucky young boy” after the sign fell from an optician’s in Newport, near Telford in Shropshire, at 1.40pm.

Medics said the baby’s pram had taken the brunt of the force as the hanging sign plummeted from the store in St Mary’s Street, while the boy suffered only minor head and leg injuries. A picture of the pushchair released by the ambulance service showed its buckled canopy.

West Mercia police said they were investigating the circumstances and would pass on their findings to the Health and Safety Executive.

An ambulance spokesman said: “The 999 callers described how a shop sign about one metre square had fallen about 20ft from a shop and landed on the pram. On arrival, the crews found the 10-month-old boy and his mother in a nearby shop. The pram appears to have taken the bulk of the force from the sign landing. Thankfully, the little boy escaped serious injury.”

The child was assessed at the scene and taken to the nearby Princess Royal hospital.
