The police at U.C.L.A. were investigating reports of a shooting Wednesday at an engineering building on campus, and urged students and faculty to avoid the area. The campus was placed on lockdown. Two people were killed Wednesday in a shooting at a U.C.L.A. engineering building, the university said, and the police were sweeping the building, looking for a gunman.
According to a statement on the university newsroom’s Twitter account, a shooting was reported near Boelter Hall; some reports placed the episode nearby at Engineering building No. 4 or at a parking garage across the street. The shooting took place at the university’s Engineering IV building. The campus has been placed on lockdown.
A media relations officer, Rebecca Kendall. told The Associated Press that police were on the scene at Boelter Hall. “Police are on the scene,” a statement from the university said. “The campus is on lockdown. People are being asked to shelter in place.”
The suspect was described as a white male dressed in black, law enforcement officials said.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives were en route to the scene, the agency said.
The gunman is wearing a black jacket and black pants, according to the police, the student newspaper, The Daily Bruin, reported.
