TV stars revel in Bafta spotlight Gavin and Stacey scoops TV Baftas
(about 1 hour later)
Some of the biggest stars in British television are attending this year's Bafta TV Awards ceremony in London. Comedy hits Gavin and Stacey and Harry Hill's TV Burp have taken the glory at the Bafta Television Awards in London.
Costume drama Cranford leads the nominations with four, including two in the best actress category for Dame Judi Dench and co-star Dame Eileen Atkins. BBC Three's Gavin and Stacey beat the likes of Strictly Come Dancing and Britain's Got Talent to the audience award, voted for by the public.
The ceremony, hosted by Graham Norton, is being held at the London Palladium. Its co-writer and actor James Corden also won best comedy performance.
Bruce Forsyth will receive Bafta's highest accolade, the Academy Fellowship, in recognition of his "outstanding body of work". ITV's Harry Hill won best entertainment performance and programme, while Dame Eileen Atkins beat Cranford co-star Dame Judi Dench to win best actress.
"That is a Brucie bonus I suppose," he told BBC News on the red carpet. "It's overwhelming and I'm very, very thrilled." Cranford had led the nominations with four, but Dame Eileen won the costume drama's only prize of the night.
Cranford star Dame Judi, who played Matty Jenkyns in the adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's work, has now received 12 Bafta TV nominations and won four. Dame Eileen, who played Miss Deborah Jenkyns, in the adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's work, was last nominated for a Bafta TV Award in 1969 and had never previously won.
Stars of Gavin and Stacey speak to the BBC Bruce Forsyth talks to David Sillito about receiving Bafta's highest accolade.
Dame Eileen, who played elder sister Miss Deborah, was last nominated in 1969 and has never won. Andrew Garfield was named best actor for his role in Boy A, Channel 4's drama about a juvenile child-killer.
Dame Eileen said there was no rivalry for this year's award. "One's too old to be competitive," the 73-year-old said. Holby City won a Bafta TV Award for the first time, triumphing over EastEnders, Emmerdale and The Bill in the continuing drama category. Coronation Street was not even nominated.
"You're only desperate between 20 and 40, and after that your career is set and it won't make a difference." Jimmy McGovern's The Street was named best drama series for the second year in a row, beating Life On Mars, Rome and Skins.
They will face competition in the best actress category from The Street star Gina McKee - who won in 1997 for Our Friends in the North - and newcomer Kierston Wareing for Ken Loach's It's A Free World. Channel 4's Britz, a thriller about two young British Muslims, won the best drama serial prize.
All four contenders in the best actor category are first-time nominees. Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares was named best feature, Heroes picked up the international prize and Iraq story The Mark of Cain won best single drama.
Dame Judi Dench is hoping for the fifth Bafta TV Award of her career The best comedy programme prize went to Fonejacker, while Peep Show was crowned best situation comedy.
They are Sir Anthony Sher for Primo, Matthew Macfadyen for Secret Life, Andrew Garfield for Boy A and Tom Hardy for Stuart: A Life Backwards. Christmas special
The Street was named best drama series last year, and is nominated again, alongside Life on Mars, Skins and Rome. Gavin and Stacey was not even nominated in the sitcom category - the unsuccessful nominees were Benidorm, The IT Crowd and The Thick Of It.
Coronation Street has been left off the best continuing drama shortlist, with that trophy to be contested by The Bill, Emmerdale, EastEnders and Holby City. Gavin and Stacey, about the ups and downs of a young couple and their clans, won its awards on the same night that the last episode of the second series went out on BBC Three.
Harry Hill, who has become a Saturday night fixture with his wacky round-up of the week's TV, is nominated for best entertainment performance and best entertainment programme. On the red carpet, James Corden said they were working on a Christmas special but he did not know if a third series would be made.
His rivals in the entertainment performance category are Stephen Fry for QI, Simon Amstell for Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Alan Carr and Justin Lee Collins for The Friday Night Project. "We can only really make [a third series] if we think it's going to be better than the first two," he said. "We only really want to make one if we know we have got a story that's worth telling."
The other contenders for entertainment programme are Britain's Got Talent, Strictly Come Dancing and Have I Got News For You. Meanwhile, Bruce Forsyth received Bafta's highest accolade, the Academy Fellowship, in recognition of his "outstanding body of work".
In the comedy categories, Extras agent Stephen Merchant, David Mitchell from Peep Show, The Thick of It's Peter Capaldi and Gavin and Stacey's James Corden are in the running for best performance.
Public vote
Gavin and Stacey is also in contention for the audience award - the only category where the winner is chosen by the public.
Ruth Jones, who co-wrote and acts in the show, said: "It's fantastic because it's the people out there voting for us, hopefully. We're really honoured."
But it will have to beat TV heavyweights The Apprentice, Strictly Come Dancing, Britain's Got Talent, Cranford and Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain.
Host Graham Norton said: "It's a great night. This is the one that everyone shows up for, the crowds and the celebrities."
Alesha Dixon, Patsy Palmer, Keeley Hawes, Ross Kemp and Kirsty Young are among the stars who will hand out awards.
Last year, Victoria Wood, Ricky Gervais and The X Factor won some of the top prizes at the Bafta TV Awards.
