A man has died after his car plunged off a bridge into a river in South Yorkshire.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was travelling on the A1M northbound between junction 36 and 37 around Warmsworth, near Doncaster, police said.

South Yorkshire police said the incident happened at about 6:30am on Monday and that an operation was underway to remove the vehicle from the river Don.

The police added:“The northbound carriage way is closed and is expected to remain closed for some time while the incident is dealt with. Drivers are advised to avoid the area.”

A spokeswoman for the force confirmed that one person had died.

“While formal identification of the body has not yet taken place, the family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers,” said South Yorkshire police, adding that regional underwater search teams were en route to assist officers at the scene.

According to locals, the car went through the barrier on the high bridge above the Don.

The Highways Agency put a diversion in place after the accident, routing motorists via the A630, A19 and A638 around Doncaster.
