Police have reported an active shooter situation at an area Wal-Mart retail location in Amarillo, Texas.  Police have shot and killed an armed suspect after responding to an active shooter and hostage situation at a Wal-Mart retail location in Amarillo, Texas. 
Law enforcement is asking that all residents stay away from the retailer. Amarillo Police are reportedly evacuating people out of the building.  "The suspect has been shot by [Amarillo Police Department] SWAT and has died. Hostages inside are safe," the Randall County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. 
Preliminary reports have said the shooter may have taken hostages, but a police spokesperson could not confirm those details at this time. Police earlier described the situation as a "work-place violence type event" in a statement. 
The spokesperson told The Independent that the situation has been ongoing for "about 30 minutes."   The Randall County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that at least one hostage had been taken by the suspect. While shots were reported, there are still no confirmed injuries. 
Additional information was not immediately available. State and local agencies are on the scene, including SWAT and Department of Public Safety personnel.
