Progressive Christians changing the church

After Orlando, many are angry with the church for not doing more to fight homophobia (Letters, 16 June). Friends ask me, as a trainee vicar, why the church perpetuates homophobia. And as a trainee vicar who is also a gay man, I answer them, because there aren’t enough people like you in it. The church is changing fast. The Church of England responded to Orlando with solidarity and prayer, and there are ever more LGBT people in its pews and pulpits. But we are a church of people who turn up. If you want to help us change, come and stand with us. Conservatives will always have a loud voice. So progressive Christians need your solidarity too.Thomas SharpCoordinator, Diverse Church North-East • In an advert in the Guardian (13 June) urging Britain to vote to remain in the EU, Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary wrote “we want to continue to invest in and grow our business in GB where we have recently opened a new base in Belfast”. I hope Ryanair pilots’ geography is better than O’Leary’s. If they think, as he does, that Belfast is in Great Britain, they may spend a long time looking for it…Rev Iain McDonaldDawlish, Devon • You say Jeremy Corbyn’s performance’s in winning four parliamentary byelections since he became Labour leader (Editorial, 18 June) is the equivalent of comfortable home wins in football. In reality, such a record for the English football team would be immense. Step forward, the successor to Roy Hodgson.Keith FlettLondon • I can well understand a transcriber mistaking “new displays” for “nudist plays” (Letters, 17 June). The first time I listened to the Radio 4 programme Crossing Continents, I was sure I’d heard it being announced as “cross incontinents”.Sue BouldingStanwardine, Shropshire • My favourite word (Letters, 18 June) is ubiquitous, but it is rarely seen anywhere now.Gren GaskellMalvern, Worcestershire • Join the debate – email guardian.letters@theguardian.com |
