Police cordon
Badocks Wood, in Southmead, has been cordoned off for the police search, which began at about 0630 BST and is expected to last until at least 1000 BST.
About 50 officers are taking part in the search.
Neighbourhood policing Inspector Mark Jackson said: "It is important that the area is thoroughly examined so we would urge walkers who may use the woods to be patient if certain parts of the woods are not accessible.
"The local community should be assured that this action is being taken for public safety reasons, although there is no specific intelligence to suggest we are likely to find anything significant in the woodland."
A Bristol City Council reserve officer is involved in the operation to ensure no disruption to the nature reserve in the wood.
