South Yorkshire Police website 'hacked by Albanian group' South Yorkshire Police website hacked by 'Albanians'
(about 1 hour later)
South Yorkshire Police's website appears to have been hacked by a group based in Albania. South Yorkshire Police's website has been hacked by a group purporting to be from Albania.
The force said it would use its Facebook and Twitter accounts to pass on any information while the issue is resolved. Following Sunday's hack, the front page of the site showed an Albanian banner and a carousel of images including football fans at Euro 2016.
The matter is being dealt with by the force's technical team, who are working to find a solution, police said. It later changed to a message claiming "no data was leaked" and signed "Albanian Hackers".
A security expert warned the attack is "potentially very serious".
The force said it would use its Facebook and Twitter accounts to pass on any information while its technical team tried to regain control of the site.
By 15:00 BST the site appeared to have returned to normal.
'Deface page'
Eliza May Austin, information security employee for EA Games, said the hackers could access restricted information.
She said: "If they have compromised the website, that means they might have direct access to the back-end database of the website."
"It depends on what kind of information can be processed through the site and whether it is connected to anything else on the system," she added.
The first image posted by the group proclaimed: "It's Good To Be Albanian."
Later, the red and black image was replaced by text on a white background.
The message read: "no worry no data was leaked or deleted, simple a deface page was uploaded."
