As protests continued overnight over the killing of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, news emerged of police fatally shooting a Minnesota man, Philando Castile, 32, during a traffic stop. In a video posted on Facebook Live on Wednesday night, a woman narrates how the officer asked her boyfriend for his license and registration. She says the man told the officer it was in his wallet but that he also had a pistol he was licensed to carry. “The officer said, ‘Don’t move,”’ the woman in the video says. “As he was putting his hands back up, the officer shot him in the arm four or five times.” Castile, his shirt covered in blood, appears to die as his girlfriend continues her commentary. According to the Guardian’s ongoing investigation The Counted, 561 people have been killed this year in the US by law enforcement. The justice department is now investigating the separate Sterling case in Baton Rouge. A new witness video appears to show one of the Baton Rouge police officers involved taking a gun from the 37-year-old’s right pocket after he was fatally shot.As protests continued overnight over the killing of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, news emerged of police fatally shooting a Minnesota man, Philando Castile, 32, during a traffic stop. Former TV producer may have orchestrated lawsuit accusing Trump of raping a childFormer TV producer may have orchestrated lawsuit accusing Trump of raping a child
Norm Lubow, an eccentric anti-Trump campaigner and ex-producer for the Jerry Springer TV Show, appears to be the man who orchestrated a lawsuit claiming Donald Trump raped a 13-year-old in the 1990s. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee denies those claims. Lubow, apparently now using the name “Al Taylor”, is linked to several other outlandish claims against celebrities. He has previously claimed he sold OJ Simpson illegal drugs on the day Simpson’s estranged wife Nicole Brown was murdered, and that Kurt Cobain’s widow Courtney Love had the Nirvana frontman killed for $50,000.Norm Lubow, an eccentric anti-Trump campaigner and ex-producer for the Jerry Springer TV Show, appears to be the man who orchestrated a lawsuit claiming Donald Trump raped a 13-year-old in the 1990s. Voices of America: middle class tired of empty promisesVoices of America: middle class tired of empty promises
In our continuing series Voices of America, we explore how the middle class struggles economically and how superficial talk of the declining middle in the 2016 presidential election is meaningless for single parents like mother of three Latonia Best. She has three bachelor’s degrees and has been working three years a special needs teacher, but only makes $3,333 a month, a household salary that puts her below the official definition of middle income even when adjusted for the relatively low-cost town like Goldsboro, North Carolina. Unfortunately, her story is not unique, as a recent study by the Pew Research Center highlights the shrinking middle class. Defiant Tony Blair defends Iraq warDefiant Tony Blair defends Iraq war
Former UK prime minister Tony Blair remained unrepentant after the exhaustive Chilcot report into the Iraq war savaged his leadership and rationale for the war, concluding it was unnecessary, poorly planned and poorly informed. Blair on Wednesday defended his decision to go to war in 2003, saying it was “the hardest, most momentous, most agonising decision I took in 10 years as British prime minister”. But asked whether invading Iraq was a mistake Blair said: “I believe we made the right decision and the world is better and safer.”Former UK prime minister Tony Blair remained unrepentant after the exhaustive Chilcot report into the Iraq war savaged his leadership and rationale for the war, concluding it was unnecessary, poorly planned and poorly informed. British man pleads not guilty to Trump assassination attemptBritish man pleads not guilty to Trump assassination attempt
A court in Las Vegas has heard a 20-year-old British man plead not guilty to charges that he tried to steal a police officer’s gun to shoot Donald Trump. Michael Sanford, from Dorking in England, was arrested at a Trump rally in Las Vegas on 21 June after he tried to grab the pistol of a police officer protecting the presumptive Republican nominee. Sandford apparently told officers that he had intended to kill Trump, and said that he had purchased tickets to another event in Phoenix, Arizona, should his first attempt fail. US attorney general Loretta Lynch has closed the case on the former secretary of state’s private server after meeting with FBI director James Comey. Clinton and her staff were found by Comey to have been “extremely careless” but, he said, “no reasonable prosecutor” would bring a case against them. Fox’s Ailes hit by sexual harassment lawsuitFox’s Ailes hit by sexual harassment lawsuit
Former Fox & Friends anchor Gretchen Carlson claims she was removed from Bill O’Reilly’s show and given a pay cut because she would not sleep with the Fox network’s chairman Roger Ailes. The suit, filed in a New Jersey court, claims Ailes “sabotaged her career because she refused his sexual advances and [she] complained about severe and pervasive sexual harassment.” As part of Ailes’ retaliation, her lawsuit claims, Carlson received diminishing assignments. She accuses Ailes of “ostracizing, marginalizing and shunning” her before ultimately firing her from the network on 23 June.Former Fox & Friends anchor Gretchen Carlson claims she was removed from Bill O’Reilly’s show and given a pay cut because she would not sleep with the Fox network’s chairman Roger Ailes. After Portugal’s 2-0 win over Wales in the semi-finals of Euro 2016, the highly self-regarding striker Cristiano Ronaldo said he believed Portugal could win in the final with “work and humility”. “Record-breaking is something very nice,” said the Portugal captain. “I have broken many records before and I am still breaking records for club and country. Ark of KentuckyArk of Kentucky
The Guardian visits Ark Encounter, a replica of Noah’s ark situated in Williamstown, Kentucky, constructed to the exact proportions specified in the book of Genesis. It won’t float (the base is made of concrete) and cost $100m to build. It’s the creation, so to speak, of the creationist religious organisation Answers in Genesis, which believes God created the Earth in six days and that the world is 6,000 years old. The group estimates that 1.4 million people will visit the vessel in the first year and that the ark will bring $4bn to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. But it’s already stirring controversy – last month it emerged that anyone wanting to visit would have to sign an agreement disavowing same-sex marriage and pre-marital sex.
