The 1922 Committee and the board of the Conservative party have to ratify her as the new party leader, and then at some point after that David Cameron will hand over to Theresa May, via a constitutional procedure that involves telling the Queen. David Cameron has announced that he will take his final PMQs on Wednesday, then head to the palace to offer his resignation to the Queen. Theresa May is therefore expected to be installed as prime minister by Wednesday evening.
On our live blog Andrew Sparrow reports that there is “speculation in the lobby that David Cameron will want to do one final PMQs. That could lead to May becoming PM on Thursday, and a reshuffle on Friday.”
