Kenya hostage siege ends after 'police kill gunman' Kenya policeman in shooting spree in Kapenguria
(about 4 hours later)
A suspected al-Shabab gunman who had taken hostages at a police station in north-western Kenya has been shot dead, police say. A disgruntled Kenyan policeman who shot dead six of his colleagues has been killed in a shootout after an eight-hour siege.
The man had snatched a gun after he was arrested for being a suspected recruiter for the Islamist militant group, which is based in Somalia. He began his shooting spree at 05:20 local time (04:20 GMT) at a police station in north-western Kenya.
He killed at least six officers during a siege which lasted about eight hours at the station in Kapenguria town. Earlier, Kenya's police chief had said the gunman was a suspected recruiter for al-Shabab Islamist militants.
At one stage he was reported to have been firing sniper shots from a roof. An officer who was part of a police special unit sent to retake the station in Kapenguria town was also killed.
A police source has told the BBC that the gunman was unhappy that his request to resign from the police had been denied as he had not served the requisite 10 years of service after his graduation in 2013.
