Blast near Yemen Italian embassy Blasts near Yemen Italian embassy
(about 8 hours later)
A strong explosion has been heard near the Italian embassy in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, witnesses said. Yemeni security sources say two explosions heard in the capital Sanaa were caused by shells, fired by unidentified attackers.
There were no casualties, police say. Streets around the embassy have been cordoned off, reports say. The shells landed in a parking area, near a customs office and the Italian embassy, without causing casualties.
The explosion targeted the customs authority, next to the embassy, police said, although it was not clear what type of explosive device was used. It was the third rocket or mortar attack in Sanaa in the past few weeks.
Last month, one guard was killed in a blast near the US embassy in Sanaa, although the cause was not known. US officials believe the US embassy was the target of the first attack, but the mortars fired missed the compound andinjured children at a nearby school.
In a second incident, militants fired rockets or mortars at a residential compound housing Western workers. There were no casualties.
