Hyde Park 'water fight' violence sees police officer stabbed Hyde Park 'water fight' violence sees police officer stabbed
(about 11 hours later)
A police officer was stabbed when a "spontaneous water fight" on the hottest day of the year so far turned violent, the Met has said. A police officer was stabbed and four others were injured after a "water fight" in London's Hyde Park turned violent, the Met has said.
Bottles and other items were thrown at officers in London's Hyde Park after the "increasingly large crowd became hostile to police" at about 20:40 BST. One officer suffered a head injury after being hit by a bottle as an "increasingly large crowd became hostile to police".
Another officer was hit with a bottle, Scotland Yard said, while two members of the public suffered stab wounds. Two members of the public also suffered stab wounds in "horrific scenes" of violence at about 20:40 BST on Tuesday.
All four injured people are being treated in hospital, police said. Further violence saw one person stabbed in Burgess Park in south-east London.
The gathering had been attended by police since 15:00. No arrests have been made. Eyewitness Waqqas Nawaz told BBC Radio London "around 300 to 400 people" had gathered "throwing bottles at the police".
He described how police had "made a chain line across Marble Arch" to restrict people's movement and try to calm the situation.
Police officers in riot gear arrived at the park from about 15:00 and remained in place for almost 12 hours as a police helicopter was deployed. An investigation into the incident has now been launched.
Kerin, from Kennington, said: "Children were throwing bottles, they were throwing stones at police. They have no regard for the law."
Elsewhere in London, officers were pelted with missiles as they tried to break up an illegal street party on the Stamford Hill estate in north London.
A water fight in Burgess Park, Camberwell, south-east London, ended in a serious stabbing. Police confirmed earlier that there are extra patrols in the area.
Met Commander BJ Harrington said: "In Hyde Park we had a hot summer's day, lots of people coming together to enjoy that, and then a group of people who set up a sound system and unlicensed music event. Officers found themselves to be under attack.
"We reported two officers injured, it was actually five, one of which was stabbed in the hand. One with a bottle injury to the head and a couple of members of the public injured. That's not acceptable."
The injuries of the five police officers are described as not life threatening and no arrests have been made in relation to the Hyde Park violence.
