The man accused of kidnapping nine-year-old Shannon Matthews has been refused bail by a crown court judge.

Michael Donovan, 39, of Batley Carr, West Yorkshire is in custody charged with kidnap and false imprisonment and is facing a trial on 11 November.

An application for bail by a barrister at Leeds Crown Court was refused by judge Peter Collier QC, the Recorder of Leeds, on Thursday.

Shannon was missing for more than three weeks from 19 February.

Mr Donovan will go on trial alongside the girl's mother Karen Matthews, 32, who is facing charges of child neglect and perverting the course of justice.
