Philip Green and the unacceptable face of capitalism | Philip Green and the unacceptable face of capitalism |
(about 20 hours later) | |
You say of Philip Green’s behaviour that it is the unacceptable face of capitalism (Green’s reign at BHS torn apart by MPs, 25 July). Other articles in the same edition suggest a greater unacceptable abuse, one used by private companies, local authorities and government. This is outsourcing and sub-, sub-, sub-contracting away responsibility. Take for example the HMRC cleaners outsourced to Mapeley, subcontracted to Salisbury FM and sub-subcontracted to ISS; or Ferrovial, which runs the Australian remote refugee camps. | You say of Philip Green’s behaviour that it is the unacceptable face of capitalism (Green’s reign at BHS torn apart by MPs, 25 July). Outsourced providers in general can reduce costs only by reducing paid hours but not the workload, reducing wages or employing underqualified staff. The first two of these amount to the workers subsidising the project with either time or money. The third is corrupt. It is time to return to proper employment practices and employer responsibility.Michael McLoughlinLondon | Outsourced providers in general can reduce costs only by reducing paid hours but not the workload, reducing wages or employing underqualified staff. • The parliamentary report on Philip Green and BHS wheels out that tired old cliche about the “unacceptable face of capitalism”. Insofar as the essence of capitalism is the enrichment of the few at the expense of the many, would the authors of the report like to tell us just what level of greed and exploitation they feel is acceptable? | • The parliamentary report on Philip Green and BHS wheels out that tired old cliche about the “unacceptable face of capitalism”. It might also be interesting to hear the views of those New Labour notables under whose stewardship Green received his knighthood. But perhaps Tony Blair is just too busy counting his own millions to comment.Paul BreamWallsend, North Tyneside
• Even if Philip Green paid in full the BHS pension fund shortfall to keep his tarnished gong as a pragmatic compromise (Nils Pratley, 25 July), this would be a mockery without his wife Tina Green and family ending their Monaco tax domicile and paying more than several luxury yachts’ worth of lost taxes. |
To avoid such future embarrassments the Cabinet Office should get HMRC to vet all honours nominations to weed out non-doms, tax exiles and those benefiting from offshore family trusts free of inheritance tax. These remain untaxed when the income is invested or spent abroad. David NowellNew Barnet, Hertfordshire
