Samia Shahid death: Relative held over threats to MP Naz Shah
(about 4 hours later) | |
A relative of a woman whose husband fears she was the victim of a so-called honour killing in Pakistan is being held over alleged threats against a Labour MP, the BBC understands.
The woman was arrested on Tuesday night in connection with alleged comments made to Bradford West MP Naz Shah.
Ms Shah is investigating the death of Samia Shahid, 28, from Bradford, who died last week in Northern Punjab.
Her family claim she died from natural causes.
However, her husband, Syed Mukhtar Kazam, believes she was killed because her family disapproved of their marriage.
He said that before she went to Pakistan, his wife's family had threatened her life.
Speaking to the BBC earlier, he said: "They were threatening us because she got married out of the family with her own will and they didn't like it."
West Yorkshire Police, who is investigating Ms Shahid's death, confirmed she had previously been harassed by a family member in Bradford last September.
The MP has written to the prime minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, calling for Ms Shahid's body to be exhumed.
She said: "I'm not going to rest until I'm satisfied I know the cause of her death - we need to investigate it fully."
The 32-year-woman remains in custody. |
