Police surround Sheffield brewery after reports man entered with gun Police find no evidence of reported gunman at Sheffield brewery
(about 1 hour later)
Armed police have surrounded a disused brewery in Sheffield and closed the roads around it after reports that a man was seen entering the building with a gun. Police have found no evidence of a suspected gunman who was reported to have entered a disused brewery in Sheffield early on Friday morning.
South Yorkshire police said they had received reports early on Friday morning that a man carrying what was believed to be a gun was seen entering the former Stones brewery on Neepsend Lane, north of Sheffield city centre. South Yorkshire police had sealed off the former Stones brewery on Neepsend Lane, north of Sheffield city centre, after reports that a man carrying what was believed to be a gun had entered the site.
Members of the public have been warned to stay away, with closed roads expected to cause traffic problems while officers continue to search for the suspected gunman. There was rush hour disruption as roads were closed and the public were warned to steer clear of the area for almost seven hours while officers conducted a comprehensive search.
At about midday the force issued a statement saying it was confident that there was no substance to the report, and that it wanted to reassure the public there was no ongoing danger.

Armed officers were deployed as soon as the first reports of the gunman were received, police said. They continue to scour the area. Supt Scott Green said: “In the current climate, we will always take any report of this nature seriously and put measures in place to ensure the safety of the public as this is and will always be paramount.
The force said in a statement: “The area being searched for the man within the brewery and disused land is vast and to ensure the public’s safety while this is carried out, a number of roads have been cordoned off and will remain closed throughout the morning.” “I want to thank the public for their patience and understanding with this incident, as there has been major disruption in Sheffield this morning and we appreciate this has caused significant traffic delays and people being unable to attend their place of work and go about their daily business.
Ben Monnie, 38, who lives locally, told Sheffield’s The Star: “It’s concerning that there’s a gunman reported at large. This is a major bus route and a residential area, there are lots of young people and families. “I would always encourage anyone to report incidents of this nature to the police, as we will always take action to ensure the city is kept safe and free from harm.”
“It’s normally very quiet here. I’m quite shocked, I have only lived in Sheffield for 18 months and gun crime here isn’t something I have heard of.”
