The circumstances of the incident at around 11pm local time  (7am BST, Friday) were unclear and a manhunt continues for possible suspects. Police chief Shelley Zimmerman said the two officers had stopped a car shortly before 11pm local time (7am BST, Friday) when they called for emergency assistance.
A spokesperson for the San Diego Police Department said: “It is with a very sad heart that we announce the death of one of our officers. Pray for his family.” Back-up arrived minutes later to find both officers shot. One was driven to hospital by a colleague but doctors were unable to save his life and he later died of his injuries.
The second officer injured in the incident was undergoing surgery and his condition is unknown. The second officer underwent emergency service but was hoped to survive.
One suspect was arrested around an hour after the shooting was announced but searches continue for others believed to remain on the run in the Southcrest area. Ms Zimmerman did not name the officers but said the killed man had a wife and two children, while the injured officer's wife was at his side.
A suspect was arrested nearby around an hour after the shooting. The man, described as Hispanic, was suffering from a gunshot wound and put under guard while receiving treatment in hospital.
Police appealed to residents to stay inside as searches continued for others believed to remain on the run in the Southcrest area.
Ms Zimmerman said she could not speculate on whether the shooting was a deliberate ambush or attack, saying the investigation was in its early stages.
