Drivers have been urged to take extra care on Northern Ireland roads over the bank holiday weekend.

The head of the PSNI's road policing development said that, as in other holiday periods, there was an increased risk of collisions.

"The combination of brighter evenings and a bank-holiday weekend will mean more people will be out and about," Superintendent Roy Marshall said.

During 2007, 113 people died on Northern Ireland roads.

This was 13 less than in 2006, but Superintendent Marshall said many of these deaths could have been avoided.

"Our message to drivers and riders is very simple. We all have a role to play in preventing deaths and injuries on our roads," he said.

"If you speed, take drink or drugs and drive, fail to wear your seatbelt, drive carelessly or dangerously, you run the real risk of killing or seriously injuring yourself, your passengers or some other innocent road user.

"The majority of deaths and serious injuries caused by road traffic collisions on our roads are entirely preventable, so we make absolutely no apology for adopting a robust approach to enforcement."
