Mohammed Abdul-Wahid jailed over fatal 124mph A1 race

A man has been jailed for taking part in a 124mph (199km/h) race along the A1 which ended in a fatal crash.

Mohammed Abdul-Wahid was racing against Ryan Charlton near Gateshead's Angel of the North on 19 April 2015.

Mr Charlton, 23, of Gateshead, died after his car overturned.

At Teesside Crown Court, Abdul-Wahid, 32, from Middlesbrough, was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison having been found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr Charlton, who was driving a Honda Civic Type R, was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash happened at about 05:00 BST.

Abdul-Wahid fled the scene in his VW Golf R32 before being tracked down.

In a statement, Mr Charlton's family described their loss as "devastating" and added his death was the "hardest thing that has ever happened to us as a family".
