Greenwich blaze: Man rescued from Studio 338 nightclub fire Greenwich blaze: Police investigating Studio 338 nightclub fire
(about 11 hours later)
A man has been airlifted to hospital with severe burns after being rescued from a burning nightclub in London. Police are investigating a fire in south east London which left one man in a critical condition in hospital.
The man was found by firefighters in the Studio 338 building in Boord Street, Greenwich, near the o2. The man, in his 20s, was taken to hospital and the Metropolitan Police said he was left "fighting for his life".
About 100 firefighters are tackling the fire and plumes of smoke can be seen for miles across the city. Police were called to Studio 338 on Boord Street, Greenwich, by the London Fire Brigade at 11.55 BST.
London Fire Brigade said a large part of the ground floor of the nightclub and part of its first floor were alight. Fire crews are still damping down the fire.
An industrial warehouse nearby is also completely alight and a scrap paper processing yard, containing a number of outbuildings, is also partly alight. Fire crews are having to damp down the fire from outside the nightclub as the building is too structurally unsafe for them to enter.
A safety cordon was set up as gas cylinders were on site. Fourteen men were initially arrested on suspicion of arson but were released without charge later on Monday.
People in the area have been asked to keep doors and windows closed because of the smoke. Cordons are still in place at the scene and police said inquiries were continuing but the southbound Blackwall Tunnel was reopened around 06:00 BST.
The southbound Blackwall Tunnel has been closed because of smoke blowing across the A102. Long traffic delays are reported in the area. About 100 firefighters tackled the fire and plumes of smoke could be seen for miles across the city.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. London Fire Brigade said a large part of the ground floor of the nightclub and part of its first floor had been alight.
Station manager Winston Douglas said: "This is a large fire and the smoke could be seen from across London, meaning our 999 control officers took over 50 emergency calls. A nearby industrial warehouse nearby also caught alight as well as scrap paper processing yard, containing a number of outbuildings.
"Our firefighters are making steady progress but they will be at the scene for the rest of the day, and possibly into the evening so please try and avoid the area if possible." Station manager Andy Walton said firefighters were making "good progress" but that there was still a lot of smoke coming from the fire.
Emergency services received the first call at 11:43 BST. "We are still advising people to avoid the area if possible and for those living nearby to continue to keep their doors and windows closed as a precaution," he added.
Fire crews are having to damp down the fire from outside the nightclub as the building is too structurally unsafe for them to enter.
