The Police will round off their reunion gigs with a concert in New York, the city where they began their first tour of the United States in 1978.

The date and venue have yet to be confirmed but the show will raise money to be spent on arts programming on the city's public TV stations.

The Police reunited last year for a series of concerts around the world.

The group - Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers - had the top-grossing and top-earning tour of 2007.

They have played to more than 2.5 million people on five continents in all.

"We kicked off our very first American tour at CBGB's in 1978 and this summer, 30 years later, our journey will come full circle," the band said in a statement.

The Police play their final concert together in the UK at the Hard Rock Calling festival in London's Hyde Park in June, after headlining the Isle of Wight Festival.

The group have also pledged $1 million (£509,000) to help New York reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2030.

The donation, which will be matched by a fund overseen by the city mayor Michael Bloomberg, will help to plant 10,000 trees.
