An anglers group are considering taking legal action against Seagate Technology Media Ireland Ltd over a fish kill in the River Roe three years ago.

The US company was fined £6,000 on Wednesday for discharging chemicals from its plant into a sewerage system near Limavady.

The discharge took place on the same day that hundreds of game fish died in a major kill on the River Roe.

The Roe Anglers Association have said they are taking legal advice.

Marc Duncan of the Roe Anglers Association said the organisation was considering the next step.

"We are seeking advice now from our solicitors, from the Ulster Angling Federation, and from the Loughs Agency.

"It's to try and gain something back - not to restock the river but to enhance habitat and nursery areas for juvenile fish in the future," he said.

Norman Henderson from the Department of Environment said it was one of the most serious incidents the body has had to deal with.

"It affected about three kilometres of river, and hundreds of fish were killed.

"It was very serious- we would have regarded it as one of the more serious incidents we've had to deal with in recent years," he said.
