Witnesses said the Toyota crashed into the Littlewoods store before reversing at high speed in a semi-circle into the Greggs bakers next door.
The entire glass panel at the front of the shop had been smashed by the impact of the crash and part of its frame damaged.
One of the windows at the Littlewoods store had also been smashed and displaced light panels dangled from the ceiling.
Crowds gathered on either side of Cambridge Street, which was cordoned off by police.
Kirsteen Lawrie, 31, who works in the bank across the road, said she was standing outside with other staff when the accident happened.
'Very shaken'
She said: "The car hit the Littlewoods window and I saw there was a woman lying underneath.
"The car then seemed to go in a semi-circle and reversed right back into the bakers.
"There were a lot of people around, it was very frightening. Some of the people around me started to run down the road.
"I dialled 999 and I saw some people helping the woman who was under the car."
Andy Smeall, 24, who works at a nearby hotel, added: "I heard this loud noise and when I went out I saw a car reversing back at speed.
"The driver stayed in the car but then some guys got her out and sat her down."
One worker returning to Greggs said: "We're very shaken."
