One person dead after Aberdeen beach rescue Two people dead after Aberdeen beach rescue
(about 1 hour later)
At least one person has died after a rescue operation recovered four people off Aberdeen beach. A mother and son have died after a group of people got into difficulty in the sea off Aberdeen beach, police have said.
The coastguard said two of them were rescued by police and the two others by the crew of a lifeboat. The emergency services arrived at the scene at 16:45 BST and recovered five people from the water.
All four - believed to be two women and two children - were taken to hospital. There is no information about the condition of the other casualties. A 37-year-old woman and a seven year-old boy died in hospital, police said. A boy, 13, a woman, 25 and a 28-year-old man remain in hospital.
The alarm was raised shortly after 16:30 BST. Chief Inspector Stewart Mackie said it was a "very tragic incident".
He added: "It will undoubtedly bring shock and sadness to the entire city of Aberdeen and further afield.
"Given the recent weather conditions we'd urge members of the public to take care, especially when near coastal or beach areas."
He also urged anyone who witnessed the incident to make contact with police by calling 101.
