Turtle theft from aquarium sparks police warning Turtle returned to aquarium 24 hours after being taken

A turtle stolen from an aquarium is likely to die without specialist care, police have warned. Clyde the turtle has been safely returned after reportedly being removed from an aquarium tank by a young boy. Clyde was returned to Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, in a washing-up bowl full of water on Wednesday.
Clyde was taken from the Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, on Tuesday. Turtle keeper Tom Fielding said: “Thank you to everyone so much for getting the message out this is incredible. Clyde was really cold so the first thing we needed to do was to get her warm.” He added: “The water she was brought back in was incredibly cold but I'm just thankful she's back and we can get her back to fighting fit now.”
Police are investigating the circumstances of the theft of the reptile, which is 20cm long. Cheshire Police said officers are speaking to the people who returned the turtle to “establish the circumstances of the incident”.
In an appeal on their Facebook page, Cheshire Police said: “At 5.30pm on 30th August we were called to the Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port to a reported theft of a turtle. We are keeping an open mind on the circumstances at this time. Detectives issued a CCTV image of a woman in a public appeal for information after the 20cm-long reptile went missing at 5.30pm on Tuesday.
“Were you at the Blue Planet Aquarium today? Did you see anything suspicious? Did you see anyone enter any of the enclosures or perhaps in sodden clothing?
“Staff at the aquarium advise that without specialist care the turtle is likely to die.
“If you have any information please call us on 101 and quote incident number 719 of 30th August. Anonymous calls can be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
