Re “ ‘A Piece of Penn Station’: An Exiting Departures Board Prompts Wistful Goodbyes” (news article, Aug. 29):

If the depressing and utilitarian Penn Station can be said to have a soul, it might be the departure board in the Amtrak boarding area. In a place without sunlight, seating, character or sense of place, the huge sign is a gathering place and focal point.

Amtrak’s cavalier decision to remove it in favor of a series of monitors eliminates an emblem of unity and destination, and replaces it with what? Yet more isolating screens?
