UK security worker 'shot in Iraq' UK worker feared killed in Iraq
(about 1 hour later)
Reports that a British security worker has been shot near the Iraq-Kuwait border are being investigated by officials. A British security worker is feared dead and another injured in a shooting in Iraq, the Foreign Office says.
It is believed the Briton may have suffered an injury when Iraqi police opened fire earlier on Friday near the border city of Safwan. The private security workers came under fire on Friday morning as they passed in convoy through Al Zubayr in southern Iraq, south west of Basra.
The Foreign Office confirmed that officials were looking into reports of an incident near the border. British officials are investigating reports that the convoy may have come under fire by Iraqi police.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed no army personnel were involved. "There seems to be some sort of Iraqi personnel involvement but it is not clear," said the Foreign Office.
Ambush A spokesman said it was believed that an injured civilian was recovering in the Shaibah military base.
According to Major General Ali al-Moussawi, police opened fire because a vehicle did not stop at a roadblock. "We understand that another British civilian may have been killed," he said.
British military spokesman Captain Tane Dunlop said the Briton was wounded.
On Thursday, a convoy of private security contractors were ambushed near Safwan, with four Americans and an Austrian civilian now being held hostage.
