Away from mathematics, Ron Shaw, was a member of the Ramblers’ Association, and a great contributor to the creation of the Yorkshire Wolds Way, one of 16 long-distance trails in England and Wales. The beautiful 79-mile route was officially opened in 1982, after much effort by many ramblers, staff of the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Yorkshire County councils and the Countryside Commission (now Natural England).
