Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump go head to head in the first presidential debate. A record audience of 100m viewers is expected to watch. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump faced off in their first debate since becoming the presidential nominees. 
The Democratic candidate will seek to provoke her Republican rival into one of his characteristic outbursts, while Mr Trump’s aim must be to show he can maintain a presidential air. The candidates entered the debate in a near dead heat as polls showed Ms Clinton's lead all but disappear. But Ms Clinton may see a boost after tonight's performance, during which Mr Trump appeared underprepared. 
Either way, with Ms Clinton holding only a razor-thin edge in the polls over her opponent, it is sure to be gripping television and a potentially pivotal moment in the election race. Mr Trump repeatedly resorted to the version of himself present during the Republican primaries, as he continuously interrupted Ms Clinton and continued to repeat falsehoods.
